HAAWC is in the process of programmatic development
for programs which are animal-related and enabling the Human-Animal Bond (HAB).
HAAWC's Human-Animal Advocacy Veterinary Care (HAAVC) program for people in crisis is one such initiative.
HAAWC’s unique philosophy of wellness
comes from the perspective that people, animals and nature are connected: what
affects one, affects all. There is a synergistic
effect when humans and animals heal together.
According
to the American Veterinary Medical Association, 98% of Americans consider
animals to be part of the family, and approximately 70% of households have at
least one pet. Animals teach empathy and self worth, and pet owners need fewer
visits to their physicians. Pets encourage activity, ease stress and provide
social support, especially to senior citizens.
A 2001 survey of 500 Adult Protective Service Agencies in 40 states
showed that 92% of responding agencies observed incidents in which senior
citizens with pets neglected themselves. Elders are not the only people affected by these difficult financial
times. A 2010 Associated Press poll found that money would affect decisions
about pet health care for the majority of those surveyed. For disabled individuals
who rely on an animal for assistance, serious illness for their beloved companion
can be devastating.
One of HAAWC's missions is
to maintain this valuable human-animal bond for people in financial crisis.
HAAWC’s Human-Animal Advocacy Veterinary Care (HAAVC) program works directly
with the veterinary community by assisting general and specialty veterinary
practices in funding needed care for ill pets.
